    Summer Day by Mary Byron

This is the perfect class for you if you want to paint landscapes and you’d like to prepare to get outdoors in the fresh air to paint on location. With this class you will ready for the summer plein air season with some nice tools and tricks in your paint box. This is the perfect time to get the brushes moving, target the area where you’d like to beef up your skills and to get some good, solid painting under your belt for the approaching landscape painting season.
You will learn good habits, practice solid skills and understand how to solve the challenges we all encounter while painting.
In the comfort of the studio we will help you improve your painting skills by asking 4 quick questions and using 5 simple tools that will make your painting adventures fun and more productive.
You will be able to develop a solid painting foundation for making good choices, painting great landscapes and enjoying every minute of it.

If you have a laptop, ipad, Fire HD or device that can access the internet please bring it to every class.
For the first class students will need to bring an 11x14” primed canvas panel, or a primed masonite panel or a gesso primed mat board, a ruler, a pencil and all their painting supplies. We will be painting in the first class.

    Summer Day by Mary Byron

We will paint in York Village & York Harbor.
Classes will be outdoors on location. We start with a short discussion of the method I use while painting in plein air and a short demo of how I start a plein air painting. Students will receive individual attention at the easel.

We will discuss what we are seeing and focus on choosing a motif and designing a good painting. Thinking and planning ahead makes the painting process more enjoyable. We will learn and have fun! Midday there will be a lunch break. The afternoon will start with a review and discussion of the morning paintings. Depending on your experience you can expect to paint 1 - 3 small to medium sized paintings.

The “PLEIN AIR WARM UP” class is recommended for anyone interested in the one day plein air workshop especially if you are a beginner to plein air and would like to be more comfortable with the painting medium and experience.

Fabulous Plein Air - Oil Workshop
    with
    Dennis Perrin

"Gazing at Nympheas" by Dennis Perrin
    Instructor: Dennis Perrin

Date: Saturday, June 20, 9-4 pm

Fee: $110 member, $120 non member

Dennis Perrin can best be described as a painter of light as it illuminates and describes the subject. Mr. Perrin always chooses to paint in front of the subject, not content to settle for photography or video as painting material. Dennis has been called a painterly American Impressionist in the Boston School tradition, and that is not surprising since among his greatest influences are the American Painters John Singer Sargeant, Edmund Tarbell, and Frank Benson, as well as the French painter Henri Fantin-Latour. Other major influences have been Diego Velasquez, Johannes Vermeer, Thomas Dewing, Maxfield Parrish, Joseph DeCamp, and so many others. A former member of the Guild of Boston Artists, Mr. Perrin paints in order to express his great love for the beauty seen all around, especially in his immediate environment. Dennis studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art with M. Dell Weller, who taught him the power of seeing and translating that vision into paint. He continues his studies exploring the subtleties of light through paint. Among his favorite subjects are the human figure, clothed and nude, flowers, still life, and the interior space, often populated with one or more figures. Though not as frequently seen in his work, Perrin is an avid plein air painter of the New England landscape.

    Workshop
    Sailors' Valentines

Sailors’ Valentines were originally made by artisans in Barbados during the 1800’s as romantic tokens from the sea. They were purchased by homesick sailors as gifts for loved ones back home. Each intricate seashell Valentine was encased in an eight-sided hardwood box.

My fascination with symmetry, formal balance and precision has inspired me to join in the resurgence of this ‘lost art’ of Sailors’ Valentines. Having grown up at the seashore, I have a special fondness for the beauty and intricate designs of seashells. It is my intention to share this unique fine craft with those who appreciate fine works of art reminiscent of their historical past.”  Joyce Amend

In recent years there has been a revival in the art of Sailors’ Valentines. The colorful and imaginative designs of contemporary artists have inspired collectors of a new era. Undoubtedly, these too, will eventually become treasured antiques.

Time: Friday, July 17, Time: 10:00 to 1:00 pm

    Instructor - Joyce Amend

    Cost: $30 YAA Members,  $40.00 Non-Members

Before Making Maine her permanent residence, she was an art instructor and received various awards from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, the State of Connecticut, and the Hartford Education Foundation.
